Just under a week ago, I started working in a Dementia Care Regulatory Body as part of my placement for my degree.
I am in heaven. There are so many services, which is a double edged sword. The positive is that at least there are services catered for this vulnerable population. Quite a bit too. I'll be a downer though when I say that there were so many that even I, a self-proclaimed dementia activist, did not know about. Let alone the general population. So I have decided to do this...every diary, I will choose a service/role to explain in a simple way to my viewers and readers. Today I am going to talk about an initiative in my country which has huge advantages. Essentially the organisation that I work with provide transport for elderly to run errands in case of mobility difficulties. It also has an aim to give independence to the elderly. As general as this service is, with a bit of tweaking, I am of the opinion that it may be tailored for those living with dementia. For instance, what I suggest for those living with dementia is to have a live in carer to make use of the service. One of the most common symptoms of dementia is wandering around randomly, so having supervision may help them focus as well as prevent danger. Yours Truly, Fran, Dementia Activist.

Call me Fran. Soon graduating in Social Policy (or Public Administration for Americans reading this), with a special interest in dementia.
Other interests include dance (hip hop and contemporary), writing, badminton and watching animated media. I am also a Dementia Activist. Advocating for rights, change and better treatment. Not much awareness, though. Which inspired me to start this blog. It will include definitions, experiences (such as lectures and conferences), opinion pieces, recent developments in the field, as well as a diary called Diary of a Dementia Activist. I aim to post weekly, but life happens, so I may have to skip certain weeks. Nonetheless, I remain... Fran, Dementia Activist. |
